Concept of Mosaic
The concept of a mosaic is used to symbolize cultural humility and posttraumatic growth. Cultural humility is the lifelong process of increasing awareness and empathy towards individual's cultural existence. As a mosaic is created from individual pieces, our personhood is also developed from uniquely intersecting identities, experiences, beliefs, and values. By recognizing all of a person's being, their authenticity is seen and honored. During therapy it is of the utmost importance we practice cultural humility in honoring your authentic self while mindfully incorporating your individuality into treatment and healing.
Similarly, a mosaic can symbolize the experience of trauma transforming into posttraumatic growth. Often, survivors describe feeling "broken" or "damaged" from having to cope with trauma. They may feel their personhood has been reduced, feeling as though their trauma is all that defines them. When viewing a mosaic up close, it too appears broken and made up of damaged pieces of materials. Focusing on the individual pieces results in us losing sight of the whole work of art. Stepping away from the mosaic allows us to appreciate the pieces and take in the art for its entirety. During therapy, survivors are assisted in moving through their trauma and developing posttraumatic growth. Posttraumatic growth helps clients witness and embrace their wholeness, while finding meaning in life outside of trauma.
